Alexander Barnard is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at UC Berkeley. His previous work focused on anti-capitalist and anti-waste social movements; his first book, "Freegans: Diving into the Wealth of Food Waste in the United States", is forthcoming in 2016. His doctoral dissertation examines how states and public policies shape how mentally disordered persons are classified in the United States and France.
